U16s win due to Alderman's outstanding efforts [Tuesday 17 June 2003]

Cotswold District Cricket Association Junior League
Tetbury U16s - 78 all out
Cirencester U16s - 79/9
Cirencester U16s won by 1 wicket

Cirencester's opening league fixture for the U16s was held at Tetbury on Friday evening. On winning the toss, Tetbury were put in to bat and the Cirencester bowlers struggled to make an early breakthrough as Tetbury established a solid platform. The introduction of Ed Alderman changed the innings as a spell of 4 wickets in 4 balls tore the heart out of the Tetbury side. Steady bowling from the support bowlers restricted the score to 78 all out.

The top order Cirencester batsman never got to grips with the low bouncing wicket and this left the younger members of the team with it all to do as the score plummeted to 35-6. Tom Putney led the fight back but on his dismissal, Cirencester were sill 14 runs short of victory with the last pair at the crease. Enter Ed Alderman, who for the second time in the match played with a maturity beyond his years, and ably supported by Mark Putney, aged 11, the winning runs were hit with 1 wicket to spare.

Cirencester scraped a victory but will need to learn to be patient on a variety of wickets during the season!
