Shackleton's six wickets in vain for 1st XI [Tuesday 10 June 2003]

Gloucestershire County Cricket League Division 2
Stinchcombe - 170/8
Cirencester - 124 all out
Stinchcombe won by 46 runs

Cirencester lost for the third time in a row last Saturday at Stinchcombe. Having won the toss, Cirencester inserted Stinchcombe on a poor green looking wicket. Two early wickets from the bowling of James Shackleton raised hopes of bowling out the opposition for a lowly total.

However, Cirencester, apart from another excellent spell of twelve overs from John Turner for 23, were unable to capitalize on the good start. In fact, Stinchcombe at one stage looked like taking the game completely out of their reach. It was left to James Shackleton to take four late wickets to restrict Stinchcombe to a total of 170. Shackleton's career best figures of 6 for 31 off 10 overs were ample reward for a top quality second spell.

Cirencester in reply got off to a poor start losing four wickets before 50 was on the board. Cirencester's early batting was unable to cope with the lively Stinchcombe attack on a rapidly detiorarating track. It was left to Cirencester's number 4, Richard Graham, to play a beligerent innings of 56 which all too briefly gave Cirencester some hope. Unfortunately with his dismissal, Cirencester did not manage much further resistance and were eventually bowled out for 124.
