South Cerney prove too good for 3rd XI [Tuesday 3 June 2003]
Cotswold
District Cricket Association Division 3
South Cerney - 284/4
Cirencester 3rd XI - 83 all out
South Cerney won by 201 runs
Losing the toss for the ninth time in a row did not bode well for Cirencester, and so it proved. After electing to bat South Cerney soon started to pile on the runs, and no matter what was tried, Cirencester 3rd XI failed to gain the initiative at any time.
The South Cerney batsmen gorged themselves on some wayward bowling, and by the time the bowling picked up they were in the groove. M Loxton top scoring with 112* in a total of 284-4. Positives to be drawn were Carl McQueen's tight line and economic 2-39 off 9 overs and the attitude of the bowlers fighting both the heat and batsmen in imperious form.
The target of 285 was always going to be beyond Cirencester and pride was the main concern. It took 30 overs to dismiss the visitors, making South Cerney bend their backs a little. Jason Stevens showed his class with 4-21, with only Harris, Cambray, Constable and Woodcock making double figures. The 3rd XI were eventually all out for 83. On this form South Cerney will match anyone in this league, whilst Cirencester look forward to a much closer match with Poulton 2nd XI on Saturday.
