Singh's innings not enough [Thursday 13 June 2002]
Gurinder Singh's innings of 65 was not enough for a Cirencester XI as they lost by one run against touring side Stretton from Lancashire.
Captain Andy Lobo agreed that the visitors could bat first and they were bowled out for 147 without using up all of their allotted 40 overs. This was due in no small part to Andy Reynolds as he took three excellent catches as well taking three wickets for six runs from seven overs.
In reply Cirencester lost three quick wickets as Lobo, Rowe and Rao were dismissed. Dan Hudson (18) and Andy Reynolds (14) mounted a partial recovery before they were both dismissed by the off spinner Diprose.
This allowed Gurinder Singh to take the attack to the opposition bowlers and there were a flurry of boundaries as he and Tom Burgess made progress towards the target of 148.
With the last over to be bowled by Cotton, Cirencester required only two more runs to win. Burgess was caught at point attempting to go over the top before Trevor Hillier was stumped off the last ball to give Stretton victory by a solitary run.
