Weekend round-up
Wednesday 22 June 2005

Glorious weather brought mixed fortunes for Cirencester Cricket Club. The First XI welcomed local rivals Birdlip to the Park. The Town posted the very respectable score of 180 for 9 from their 45 overs and looked to be on track for victory when the visitors were struggling on 56 for 4 at the half way mark of their innings. However a fine knock by Ian Green (82 not out) led Birdlip home with three balls to spare. The match was marred though by a serious injury to 16 year old Gloucestershire Under 19 player James Shackleton. Having bowled superbly to deliver 3 wickets for 22, he attempted a sharp caught and bowled off the last ball of his 12th over and suffered a dislocation and compound fracture of his left thumb that will see him out of cricket for at least six weeks.

The 2nd XI achieved a conclusive victory at Down Hatherley, while the Thirds just lost out in a tight match at Lechlade. On Sunday, in weather resembling the sub-continent, the Sunday XI notched their first ever win over Stowell Park. First XI skipper Andy Reynolds returned to form with an innings of 57 and, after Ollie Whitaker and James Constable bowled tight opening spells, Toby Burgess-Smith, Ed Alderman and Dan Robbins took advantage of the conditions to deliver 23 overs of quality leg spin. Earlier in the week, Cirencester continued their successful Evening campaign. At home to Northleach, Iain Moore (3-20) and Andy Reynolds (2-21) led the way with the ball and then Reynolds (22 off 25 balls), Dan Robbins (39 not out off 36 balls) and Rich Hudson (47 not out off 32 balls) guided the Town into the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup.

Fielding first, Cirencester Under 11s restricted Tetbury to 233 runs taking 8 wickets, 4 of which were good catches. Tom White (2 – 11) and Charles Newman (2 – 5) were the pick of the bowlers , more than ably supported by Oliver Lockey, Fintan Lennon and Jock Jamieson-Black. Ben Field had another great day behind the stumps, producing a clean sheet. Solid batting and running between the wickets from the Cirencester batsmen pushed their total to 303 for the loss of just 2 wickets, White and Lennon put on 36 and Newman and Black 43, and secured a comfortable victory.
