Weekend round-up
Thursday 7 July 2005

The Junior section of Cirencester Cricket Club has taken centre stage during a very busy and successful time over the last few days. The U13s have reached the final of the County Cup which will be played on Friday 8th July at 6pm at the Park against Gloucester City.

The U15s have reached the semi-final of the County Cup which again will be played this Friday away at Marshfield. Last weekend, they entertained a party of Australians from Sydney Grammar School who arrived on Saturday evening and a well attended barbecue was followed by an impromptu England/Australia football match. On Sunday a 40 overs a side match was played against the visitors who showed us why beating Australians teams is so difficult, but a useful lesson will have been learnt by all. There were however some fine individual performances by Cirencester players including an innings of 46 by Sam Denning who batted for all but one over of the innings and James Denyer who took 3 for 22 off 5 overs.

The Under 11s produced an accomplished performance in the Cotswold League at Ashton Keynes. Cirencester batted first posting 266 runs , for the loss of 4 wickets , setting a target of 243 to win. Ashton Keynes replied with 243 runs with the loss of 5 wickets , totalling 218, losing by 25 runs. The bowling was a particularly strong point with Oliver Lockey (2 overs for 4 runs), Archie Nichols (2 overs for 3 runs), Fintan Lennon (1 wicket for 15 runs), Max Popli (1 wicket for 7 runs), Jock Jamieson Black (2 overs, 1 wicket for 0 runs) and Tom White (3 overs, 2 wickets for 5 runs). They were well backed by Ben Field who had a great day behind the stumps taking one catch and having another declared as ‘no third umpire to decide… not out’

The Evening Knock-out team produced an excellent bowling and fielding performance in Tuesday evening’s semi-final to restrict free-scoring Chedworth to 104. The Town were we were 20 for 0 off 2.3 overs when concerns that the bad light could lead to injury to the fielding side caused the match to be abandoned. In the re-run on Thursday, as in previous rounds, Chedworth’s Ben Price had a major say in the outcome. After another good all-round performance, Cirencester failed by just 3 runs to chase down the formidable target of 161.

On Saturday, a troublesome 6 overs in the middle of Tewkesbury’s innings was probably the cause of the First XI’s demise although a good fight-back to secure 8 points augurs well for future matches. The Seconds notched a fine win at Cheltenham Saracens and the Thirds put up a determined performance at high-flying North Cerney. In Sunday’s friendly at Cricklade, Alex Harris hit 91 not out to secure victory after the home team’s innings had seen very encouraging bowling performances from youngsters Billy Breen, Brian Coleman and Tom Jess.
