3rd XI fall short in run chase against Rodmarton [Tuesday 2 September 2003]

Cotswold District Cricket Association Division 3
Cirencester 3rd XI - 106 all out
Rodmarton - 144/7
Rodmarton won by 38 runs

The final game of the season finished as it had started back in May with the 3rd XI losing to a team that they know they can beat, but lacking the extra couple of players to make the breakthrough.

Winning the toss Cirencester opted to field, and it proved a good decision as the first four wickets fell for under 50 runs. Three to McQueen, including a stunning catch by the veteran Cambray at first slip. There was also a well-taken caught and bowled for 12 year old Hugo Price on his senior debut.

Phil Coleman was joined by his son Daniel and they built a stand of 78, batting carefully and picking off the bad balls. Hitchens was unlucky to finish wicketless after ten tight overs. Hillier broke the spell with four overs to go and two further wickets fell leaving Rodmarton on 144-7 from 40 overs, Coleman senior scoring 44 and junior 34 not out including 10 from the last 2 balls. Pick of the bowling for Cirencester was McQueen with 4-42 and the nerveless Price with 1-22 off 10. The whole team fielded with aplomb.

In reply the 3rd XI were soon in trouble with Steve Harris departing with the score on 11. Cambray and Dan Hudson put on 43 for the second wicket, but this would prove as good as it gets. Hudson departed for a confidence building 36 and this triggered the slow collapse of old for Cirencester.

Miserly bowling from Rodmarton created a slow run rate and Cambray was dismissed by an outstanding diving catch from Phil Coleman on the boundary. The only further resistance came from Woodcock with 12, and Cirencester slipped to 106 all out. Scott was the pick of the bowling with 5-21.

Although the season has ended on a low note, Cirencester have competed in all bar two matches this season, and proved to be a fair, friendly and happy side to play in and against. The young players given their chances this season will be stronger for the experience and look to follow the example of some of last season's Academy graduates.
