3rd XI bowlers struggle in sapping heat [Thursday 28 August 2003]

Cotswold District Cricket Association Division 3
Malmesbury 3rd XI - 253/1
Cirencester 3rd XI - 194/8
Malmesbury 3rd XI won by 59 runs

Winning the toss Cirencester 3rd XI invited Malmesbury 3rd XI to bat and paid the price of a poor decision with a long 40 overs in sapping humidity. Openers Phillips and Horton played with great responsibility punishing loose bowling and offering no real chances.

Cirencester bowled and fielded well, but were no match for two batsmen in great form. The only wicket came after 36 overs with Horton being bowled by the dogged Hitchens. Malmesbury finished up on 253-1 off their 40 overs. Highlights for the 3rd XI were few, but debutant Lucie Vickers' fielding was a revelation to all, as was Steve Harris' prowling of the deep outfield.

In reply Cirencester put on 30 for the 1st wicket, Dukes falling to Whateley junior for 16. Steve Harris combined with Tim Cambray to put on 59 for the next wicket, Harris scoring 45 - his highest for the season. Brief hopes that an unlikely victory could be pulled off were quashed when Shackleton was stumped for 39, leaving Woodcock as the sole batsman remaining.

Further wickets fell, including the unfortunate run-out of Bertie Graham by his captain, who soon followed for a battling 36. With just pride to play for Steve Newbegin ushered the tail with 13 not out, leaving Cirencester on 194-8 at the end. Pick of the bowling was 14 year old leg spinner Max Whiting, with 5 wickets.
