Cirencester
in good shape at halfway point of Indoor Cricket
Monday 27 December 2004
To build on the Club’s successful 2004 season and to prepare for 2005, Cirencester Cricket Club is playing Indoor Cricket in both the Cheltenham and Swindon this winter. With an innings lasting for either 10 (Swindon) or 12 (Cheltenham) overs, the matches are fast and furious with each delivery being an important event. This environment enables the players to develop skills that are transferable to the outdoor game, in particular running between the wickets and batting, bowling and fielding under pressure at the ‘death’ of a match.
The Cheltenham Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) campaign has already been wrapped up. The club used this competition as a chance to develop their younger players with the average age of the squad being 17. While the team struggled in Division 4 and were knocked out of the cup at the first round, the majority of the matches were closely contested until the very last over and the club received compliments from the umpires and scorers on the play and attitude of all the players.
Captain Rich Hudson was to be Cirencester’s leading run scorer (143 runs) and wicket taker (4 wickets), both new club bests in Cheltenham. There were notable performances from batsmen Tom Burgess who struck 130 runs with a highest score of 42, Alex Harris who scored 93 runs as well as keeping wicket and Dan Robbins who scored 91 runs. On the bowling front 15 year old James Denyer was a major success story, improving with every match and delivering a number of very economical bowling performances. These individual development accomplishments marked down the club’s Cheltenham season as a success.
The Club gauges achievement in the Swindon Indoor Cricket Association (SICA) on team results as they aim to reach the higher echelons of the competition. Having gone up to Division 3 last season, Cirencester were already aiming for a second successive promotion when they beat NALGO 3 by 89 runs in the first game. This encounter saw the club set their new record highest total in Swindon of 134/0 from 10 overs.
Despite losing their second match by one wicket off the very last ball of the match to last season’s Division 4 winners New Generation, Cirencester are well placed at the Christmas break having played five, won four, lost one. The introduction of pace bowlers Jason Moore and Tom Putney has given the team a new dimension and consecutive victories against Minety, Nationwide and Ramsbury have followed.
Opening batsmen Rich Hudson (115 runs) and Dan Hudson (117 runs) have consistently got the team off to fine starts and with fellow batsmen Andy Walker, Andy Cooper and Dan Robbins providing momentum in the middle overs Cirencester have been able to post large totals. These have been backed up by Putney (5 wickets) and Moore mixing hostility and precision and Carl McQueen troubling opposition batsmen with his accuracy.
Having received a bye in the first round of the SICA knockout cup, Cirencester are likely to get the opportunity to take on a team from a higher division. This will prove to be a good measure of what they need to improve on to take the next step up. With seven league matches left to play it should be an exciting and hopefully a successful second half of the season for the club.
