Putting
the ground to bed
Monday 13 September 2004
This weekend
is a very important one in the Cricket Club's calendar, the annual 'putting
to bed' for the winter. The key tasks are to cut and scarify the squares so
that they can be re-seeded and fertiliser, and then there are 7 tons of loam
to be spread.
We are very lucky to have a groundsman as skilled and committed as Dan Robbins.
However, as I am sure that you can appreciate, this weekend's exercise is
far beyond one person and a small group of helpers. Dan needs all the help
that is available. This therefore is a request for all senior players and
junior parents to dig out a shovel and wheelbarrow and come up to the Park
to help out for a couple of hours. If everyone can spare a couple of hours,
then a major task becomes a satisfying and enjoyable exercise.
If for any reason you do not feel able to help with the loam, there are plenty
of other jobs to be done - harrowing the outfield, tidying and securing the
nets to avoid damage over the winter, removing the sheets from the sightscreens
and laying them down, etc., as well as numerous maintenance and other tasks
in and around the Clubhouse to ensure that it is in order to prevent any further
decay over the next six months or so.
Everyone has been delighted with the quality of the wickets this season, and
with the improvements to the outfield and Clubhouse. This coming weekend will
provide the foundations to ensure that we are able to feel similarly next
year. There will be tasks all day on Saturday and maybe on Sunday so please
try to spare a couple of hours, particularly on Saturday afternoon, to give
Dan the help and support that he deserves.
Please contact me or Dan (01285 851210) if you have any questions.
Thank you very much
Brian Hudson
